Inspiration for the march stemmed from a nursing in public incident in which Afrykayn Moon was berated by a SMART bus driver in Detroit, Michigan on June 25, 2011 when Moon was asked to cover herself while nursing her infant son and mall security was called to remove her from the bus. The SMART bus corporation apologized to Moon and even provided an air-conditioned bus for moms to escape the heat to the participants of the July 1, 2011 nurse-in organized by Moon and held at the SMART bus office.
