Breastfeeding Weekly Wrap-Up: May 3-9, 2010

Babes, were you absolutely tickled with how RIGHT the mainstream media got it this week when it came to co-sleeping and breastfeeding? A Fox News affiliate in Milkwaukee, WI asked if sleeping with your baby is right or wrong, and presented information about recent deaths attributed to co-sleeping. They spoke to sleep expert Dr. Jim McKenna who guessed that formula feeding would be involved with all of the co-sleeping deaths. He was right. This is another way that breastfeeding is so vital, helping to regulate baby’s sleep and breathing patterns. And most of us know just how helpful co-sleeping can be to facilitating breastfeeding. In fact, Dr. McKenna only recommends that breastfeeding moms co-sleep!

Can you believe a medical office that performs mammographies would fire a mom for pumping breast milk? Well, it’s true. Apparently the mammography office in Midtown Manhattan didn’t get the memo that breastfeeding helps prevent breast cancer, and fired Yadiris Rivera for pumping in the bathroom (even though the law stipulates they provide a clean place to express that is not a bathroom!) She’s filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, seeking back pay and damages.

Are you as excited as I am to see the new movie Babies this weekend? The documentary follows four babies from across the globe (Namibia, San Francisco, Tokyo and Mongolia) as they learn and grow for the first year of their lives. Expect lots and lots of unabashed and uncovered breastfeeding! Let’s hope that with all the buzz this movie is garnering so far, a lot of people will get a glimpse of just how normal breastfeeding really is.

Have you checked out the new blog that is celebrating a cause that is near and dear to my heart? Black Women Do Breastfeed! features breastfeeding stories and images from black moms. If you’re a black mom who breastfeeds, share your story! We can always use more positive images of black breastfeeding.

Have you heard of Angel Flight? They are a non-profit that typically provides transportation for patients who need to travel for surgery. Made of a group of volunteer pilots, they can also be called on to deliver precious breast milk to milk banks. Pilot Keith Kocourek takes his daughter on his regular flights to transport hundreds of pounds of breast milk from a donation site to milk banks and birth centers in the Midwest. Talk about a modern day milk man!

Friend of Best for Babes, Laura Keegan, author of Breastfeeding with Comfort & Joy, gave an excellent interview to The Stir blog about how to prepare for breastfeeding during pregnancy. Check out her 7 steps, which are based on techniques found in places where breastfeeding is the cultural norm.

Did you check out our Facebook Fan Page this week? We posed the question, “The first time I breastfed was _____.” You were overheard saying….

Leslie Kung  On my son’s 3rd day of life in the NICU… Only moments after the first time I held him. He took right to nursing, and I kept going over the basic info I’d gleaned from the 5 BFing books I’d read during pregnancy…

Amy Brown lying in a hospital bed, groggy from an unplanned cesarean. We nursed for two plus years and now I’m going to be an IBCLC. It’s funny how having a baby changes everything.

Jordan Remmes  my daughter’s first proudest moment… ♥

Kalynda Madge  was frustrating and very stressful as she wouldn’t latch on and we’d both just end up in tears. Then, on the third day she finally started to get the hang of it and it was amazing. :)

Alisa Hackl-Weiss  about five min after my daughter was born. The first two weeks were painful but she nursed for 21 months.

And finally, we want to wish you a Happy Mother’s Day. Let us know in the comments how you plan on celebrating!
