Breastfeeding in Style: Maxi Dresses

I think it’s safe to say that maxi dresses are one of this year’s fashion frenzies. I mean why not? What mom doesn’t want to throw one item of clothing on and not have to worry about the unshaven legs she’s been meaning to take care of? Yep, that would be me! (Sorry hubs!)

There are some gorgeous maxi dresses out there that I am dying to put in my closet. Unfortunately, these beauties have one major flaw- I would have to strip-down naked to breastfeed in it. And if you’re like me, you’ve chosen to wear a dress that is clearly not “milk-friendly” hoping for some miracle to happen when it’s time to nurse.

One of my genius wardrobe-mal-function-moments happened to be for my little guy’s first birthday. When that little man was done with his cake and wanted some milk, I had to chauffeur myself to my bedroom and throw that cute maxi dress to the floor in order to breastfeed in peace. Sound familiar? You can swap {my home’s bedroom} with {car}, {janitor’s closet} or {bathroom stall} because this here Babe has done it all!

I guess that’s what I am here for, to share my embarrassing moments in hopes to save you from making the same mistakes. And you can thank your lucky stars, because I’ve done some research on the matter. I’ve handpicked some majorly stylin’ maxi dresses that you can breastfeed all the livelong day in! Yep, you heard me right.

To be safe and to make baby’s mealtime go smoothly, I’ve chosen both strapless and halter dresses. It might just be a personal preference, but I’ve decided that I don’t like to mess around, pulling straps to the side, or stretch a neckline down in order to breastfeed. I’d rather not ruin a perfectly made piece of clothing that I know I can easily wear sometime in the future.

So let’s stop the yappin’ and get to the fashions! This here is my edition of a Get the Look for Less: “Milk-Friendly” Maxi Dresses.

I pair all my Maxis with a bandeau-style bra. Since bandeaus don’t have underwire, I’ve found that they are great for breastfeeding, in that you can pull them up or down depending on the type of top you’re wearing. I did a post all about the beauty of the bandeau and you can find that here.

So Babes, whatchya think? Are you a Maxi lover like me? If you are, I have lots more where that came from!

Loads of Love,

Maryam

P.S. I’m warmly accepting requests for styles you’d like to see me cover…your wish is my command!

Great idea to pair them with a bandeau bra. I find that a little shrug also helps provide that bit of cover that makes bf in one of these nearly undetectable!

I am a huge fan of the maxi dress (just bought another last week) and I find myself loving the stripes from CR… but I think I’d feel weird, at 32yo, going into a teeny bopper store for clothes. Hmm, I guess that’s one of the wonders of online shopping! Thanks for all the lovely suggestions!

    • I agree with you 100% on the CR thing, Kelly! With 2 boys who like to RUN around, this lady hasn’t seen the inside of a mall-store in a very, very long time. Online shopping is the only way I can roll!

Well there went a good chunk from my bank account! Thanks for the style inspiration :)
