Alanis Morissette Ok With Breastfeeding Son Until He’s Six, Shares Nursing Picture

Alanis Morissette announced on Good Morning America today that she will breastfeed her son as long as he wants, even if that is age 5 or 6.   This is the strongest statement yet from the Grammy-award winning singer, who came out in support of attachment parenting in the wake of the controversial TIME cover of Jamie Grumet nursing her 3-year old.

Alanis Morrissette on Good Morning America, nursing her toddler!

We are so thrilled that Ms. Morissette, along with other celebrities who breastfed toddlers,  is helping to dispel the myths about “extended” or better yet, “full-term” breastfeeding.  We applaud ABC for showing a picture of Alanis Morissette nursing her toddler!   Morissette says, ” I don’t even consider it ‘extended’, I just consider it appropriate for that particular child, and that mom and that family”.   Woohoo!  We’ll bet that she’s read what Katherine Dettwyler told USA Today-that it’s quite possible that we are designed to nurse our young until they are 5 or 6.   Morissette also explained that she protects her son’s safety, well-being and attachment, and that “that stage of development is a very important stage.”   She acknowledged that she is a unique position of having the resources to do so, and that not all families do.   Hopefully she will join us in Beating the Booby Traps so that more moms can achieve their breastfeeding goals, whether those are for 2 days, 2 months or 2 years!

Here’s the clip from Good Morning America, filmed at The Pump Station, the awesome breastfeeding boutique in LA.  We applaud ABC for showing pictures of Alanis Morissette breastfeeding!   Do you think there’s any chance of getting Alanis Morissette to gently educate Whoopi Goldberg at The View?

My oldest of 4 daughters is 30 the youngest 21. They were raised AP style and no one turned out as the doomsayers pridicted! Rather than being the type that are dependent and expectant of having every need met they are loving, giving, capable, independent young women all in careers that serve others. The one that nursed till she was 5 just achieved a 4.0 in a college nursing program. Keep on all you AP and BF moms you are doing something wonderful for the next generation!

  2. I saw her at the Attachment Conference at UCLA this past March - we were all there to hear the royalty of attachment scientists speak. Her “cool” level skyrocketed for me. I had no idea, and I was pleasantly surprised.

I am excited that a celebrity has made a stand on breastfeeding. It will only help mothers like me who continue to breastfeed have a person of higher influence to strengthen my argument. Im always on the defense with the breastfeeding topic with friends..family..associates. My daughter will be 2 at the end of July and I plan to breastfeed her as long as she will let me. I am trying to keep her as healthy as I possibly can and with a family history of asthma and crohns disease I feel this is the best way.

I have two kids, the elder is a boy born in California. I was a young mum, hospital didn’t encouraged it or helped me. I didn’t breastfed him but when I moved to Sydney I saw mums nursing their kids in parks , I felt the guilt. I made sure I will nurse my second child. Now my daughter is 2 and half yrs. I have nursed her full time, loved it, it never hurt me. I felt so much more attached to her. I have just stopped nursing her 2 weeks back and basically due to pressure from people as extended breast feeding is still considered something odd. I wish I can do it still secretly (: , sometimes she still comes to me with a hope she can be breastfed.

If its only been 2 weeks, its totally possible for you to reestablish your nursing. You shouldn’t have to “closet nurse” if you aren’t comfortable stopping, don’t. I wish I had stuck to my guns and continued. It’s been ovet 2 years since we stopped nursing, and my son still asks for boobies every night. I miss the connection.

  5. Clara says:

I bet that kid will never suffer with a food allergy or asthma a day in his life.

  6. Definitely takes some courage to stand up and say something like that. Everyone is different, and the statement “I just consider it appropriate for that particular child, and that mom and that family” couldn’t be more dead on, imo.

  7. Amy says:

Now that I’m no longer an angst-ridden teenager, I thought I’d outgrown Alanis. This just proves me wrong - she’s awesome.

  8. Kiera says:

    How refreshing!

  9. Salena says:

Yeah she’s so ‘extreme’ because she is there for her child, when he needs her…

On a side note, I’m so happy to see some many of my favorite female artists being so transparent about their positive parenting experiences!!! Someday I won’t look like freak!
